Milton Erickson is widely considered to be one of the greatest Hypnotherapists that had ever lived.
He strongly believed that: The NLP Milton Model.
Erickson had a strong reputation for having an almost magical way of speaking with his clients. It’s as if his words were rich with a magical tapestry. He was a fantastic linguist and out of his work comes something called the Milton Model. He worked with trance and cleverly structured sentences full of vague meanings to help his clients discover how to address their problems and the resources that they already had available to them.
Erickson’s success was based on his ability to read non-verbal behaviour (sensory acuity, please read: the article NLP Representational Systems), his ability to establish rapport with his clients, his skill with language patterns and his beliefs about his clients. The NLP Milton Model.
In the development of the NLP Milton Model and relation to NLP, Dr. Richard Bandler studied the best and brightest counselors and therapists at the time. We’re not talking about just anybody. We’re talking about the legends – Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir, Gregory Bateson and … Milton Erickson. It wasn’t until Richard had the chance to watch and observe Milton work and discovered his verbal magic and so his “secret sauce.”
It was at this point he was able to extract the true power from Milton’s language. The NLP Milton Model.
Simply put – the Milton Model is the hidden magic that powered near all of Milton Erickson’s hypnotic interventions. It’s a set of linguistic patterns to guide people into a hypnotic trance. And to help them overcome their problems at the same time. Roughly you can divide the Milton Model into the following sub-sets of information: The NLP Milton Model.
These patterns are all part of our every day language, NLP provides us with titles for the language patterns that enable us to identify them and therefore once learnt we can use them intentionally to assist us in achieving our desired results from our communication with others.
So, in short the NLP Milton Model is a set of language patterns used to help people to make desirable changes and solve difficult problems. It is also useful for inducing trance or an altered state of consciousness to access our all powerful unconscious resources. Otherwise described as metaphors for artfully vague suggestions. The NLP Milton Model.
Milton Model statements can be very persuasive and therefore NLP encourages you to use them with ecology, care and ethics for others. Unless you are planning to train NLP, you do not need to memorize the titles of the patterns. Just to understand what they are, how they are used and to be able to create your own examples will be sufficient for you to use them effectively. The NLP Milton Model.
