In NLP Distortion is the second part of the NLP Meta Model. NLP Distortion, or Semantic Ill-Formedness, occurs when we make shifts in our experience of sensory data by making misrepresentations of reality. Let’s start with a well known story of NLP distortion in Eastern philosophy. It is the story of the rope and the snake. A man walks along a road and sees what he believes to be a snake and yells, “SNAKE!”. However, upon closer investigation he is relieved to discover that it really was only a piece of rope. The part of the Meta Model Distortion also helps us in the process of motivating ourselves. Motivation occurs when we actually distort the material that has come to us and that has already been changed by one of our filtering systems. Distortion is also helpful in planning. We distort to plan when we construct imaginary futures.
